For his intellect, his sense of humor, his willingness to speak truth to power, his prophetic vision—from the Daily Show to the Big Rally—what a Jew.
2) Elena Kagan
For her towering intellect linked to a firm sense of justice, the newest Supreme Court Justice.
3) Ofer Merin
For compassion in action, Dr. Merin established the most effective field hospital in Haiti in the immediate aftermath of the quake.
4) Michael Bloomberg
For tolerance welded to toughness, New York’s mayor stepped up to the plate and defended the right of Muslims to build a house of worship near Ground Zero.
5) Ahuva Tomer
For defending the sanctity of life. The Police Chief of Haifa died in the Carmel fires trying to save cadets.
6) Peter Beinart
For his willingness to be unpopular, to stand apart and to speak out, the writer and pundit championed a more expansive view of what it means to be “pro-Israel.”
7) Mark Zuckerberg
For his innovation and philanthropy. The Facebook co-founder gave $100 million to the Newark school system in 2010.
8) Drake
For his imagination and story-telling artistry, the world’s hottest hip-hop artist/Jewish day school graduate released Thank Me Later this year.
9) Barbara Picower
For exhibiting a billion dollar sense of justice. The widow of billionaire Jeffrey Picower decided to give back $7.5 billion in Madoff-derived profits to the swindler-in-chief’s victims.
10) Eric Cantor
For going against the grain and standing up for what he believes. U.S. Representative for Virginia’s 7th congressional district, serving since 2001, and the second-ranking member of the House Republican leadership, will become Majority Leader once the 112th Congress takes office.
And the 2010 Honorary Jew: Stephen Colbert
Just like Jon Stewart, but Catholic.
