Study finds steroid use 6 times higher among gay, bisexual teen boys

According to a study released in Pediatrics, steroid use is nearly six times higher among gay and bisexual teen boys than it is among their straight counterparts.  It’s not the first study to examine the difference in drug use between the two groups, but it’s the first to examine the issue of steroids specifically.
The reasons behind the increased steroid use are unclear, though theories abound on the subject.  The study authors suggest that perhaps gay boys are looking for a jacked-up physique in order to appear more like the ideal male figure or that they could be turning to steroids as a way of bulking up in order to fend off bullies.  Whatever the reason, the figures are staggering.  Overall, 21 percent of gay teen boys admitted to steroid use compared to 4 percent of straight boys.  Four percent of gay and bisexual teen boys reported the heaviest use of steroids, while less than one percent of their straight counterparts admitted to the same.
Dr. Aaron Blashill, a psychologist and scientist who works with the Fenway Institute, an organization devoted to the treatment of gays and lesbians, says while the disparity between the two groups is cause for sadness, the figures are not really that much of a surprise.  According to Dr. Rob Garofalo, Chief of Adolescent Medicine at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, steroid use is high among gay and bisexual teen boys because gay youth in general struggle with identity and self-image issues, more so than straight youth.  As a result, many gay and bisexual teen boys may turn to steroid use as a way of enhancing their physique.
The study focused on figures gathered between 2005 and 2007 of some 17,250 teen boys aged 16 years old on average.  Four percent of the boys, or 635 candidates, identified themselves as gay or bisexual.  Dr. Blashill says more recent figures would likely show that the same disparities exist even now, nearly a decade later.
In November 2013, the Food and Drug Administration released a warning, stating that teens and steroids were a hazardous blend.  Roughly 5 percent of teen boys and 2 percent of teen girls have reported using steroids.  That means approximately a half a million children are using steroids and risking permanent damage to their still-developing bodies.
Steroids are synthetic versions of the male hormone testosterone, which promotes muscle growth, strength and endurance among users.  However, there are significant side effects that plague their users as well, such as liver and heart problems and acne.  For teenagers using the substance, there could be permanent damage inflicted on their various body organs if they choose to use steroids.
Signs of steroid abuse can include mood swings, rapid muscle growth, and perhaps breast development in boys.  Anxiety, aggression, and high blood pressure may also result, but generally, these symptoms will disappear or at least abate somewhat when the steroid use stops.  Typically, steroids are offered through prescription only, and solely in cases where the patient has an identified low level of hormones.
Interestingly, teens are often more reticent to admit to steroid use than they are to admit they are using marijuana.  The fact that steroid use is high among gay and bisexual teen boys means that medical personnel should be looking at their adolescent male patients more closely and discussing the topic of steroid use with them.

Star Trek's Sulu asks why is Utah's governor being so mean?

Noted gay rights activist and social media socialite George Takei is headed to Utah this week for the Sundance premiere of To Be Takei, a feature length documentary about his life. Ahead of his trip, Takei spoke candidly with The Salt Lake Tribune about—you guessed it—the state’s recent flip-flopping on marriage equality.
“Why is your Governor Gary Herbert so mean?”, he asked repeatedly in a phone interview:

"Your governor seems to believe in governing by hysteria. Governor Herbert is consciously bringing harm to 2,600 citizens of Utah. That’s mean-spirited. He didn’t have to do that. Your governor is trying to put toothpaste back in the tube."

Earlier this month, Gov. Herbert announced that he would no longer recognize the marriages of more than 1,300 gay and lesbian couples who were *legally* married in the state during its short-lived two weeks of marriage equality.
Marriage equality in the state is now “on hold until further notice,” or, as soon as the US Supreme Court tells Utah the exact same thing it told the entire country last June—that discrimination is unconstitutional.

Israel's First Gay Holocaust Memorial

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai joined members of the LGBT community in Tel Aviv park yesterday to unveil a new memorial dedicated specifically to the LGBT victims of the Holocaust.
The concrete triangle-shaped plaque is said to resemble pink triangles gays were forced to wear in concentration camps during World War II, and reads “In Memory of those persecuted by the Nazi regime for their sexual orientation and gender identity.”
A lesser-known target of Adolf Hilter’s Third Reich, gays and lesbians were sent to concentration camps alongside Jews during World War II in an effort to cure what Hitler believed to be “a public health crisis.” Of more than 15,000 members of the LGBT community targeted by the Gestapo, more than half were killed or became the subject of experiments that aimed to “cure” homosexuality.
“I think in Israel today it is very important to show that a human being is a human being is a human being,” said Huldai. “It shows that we are not only caring for ourselves but for everybody who suffered. These are our values — to see everyone as a human being.”
The memorial, which sits beneath a rainbow flag and a flag of Israel, is the first in the country dedicated to non-Jewish victims of the Holocaust and joins similar monuments in Amsterdam, Berlin, San Francisco, and Sydney. “The significance here is that we are recognizing that there were other victims of the Holocaust, not just Jews,” said Tel Aviv councilman Eran Lev.

Starting 2014 in a jungle paradise is as fun as it sounds, Happy New Year

It is so hard to believe that it is 2014, well into the 21st century, kinda crazy. Luckily I was able to finish 2013 in tropical style with a great group of friends in Costa Rica's Manuel Antonio. Even amidst the cold of Manhattan as the vast and dangerous polar vortex grips much of the United States I would love to brag and show you some photos of how warm I was just last week : )
Happy New Year and much buttery success to you all.
